Writers must be able to look at the ordinary world that we pass by everyday and see it with fresh, new eyes. We must see that field that no one ever sees, that one with the abandoned church overgrown with ivy, that small office behind the grocery store where an old lady sells personally painted pots, that sewer drain with a homeless village inside, etc. etc. etc.
This activity forces student writers to explore their normal world and see it differently and imagine story scenes that could happen in those newly seen places.
Our students have gotten some great ideas from these adventurous explorations of their normal world.
