This is by far my most favorite writing assignment that I do every year. It is very high interest and creative. It will make your students stretch their imagination, and they'll be following a story structure without even realizing it! Win-win!
Here's an overview:
After reading "The Mischievians" by William Joyce, students will begin to wonder what other harmlessly mischievous things happen on a day-to-day at the hands of mischievians. For example, perhaps a mischievian is the reason for all the times people trip over absolutely nothing. A mischievian can be to blame for just about all of the annoying, pesky things that occur ordinarily.
Your students will follow the brainstorming steps to creating their own mischievian and will tell their audience about the discovery in a short, creative writing piece. My students eat this assignment up every single time. They love it. I love it because they are so hyped up over sharing their discovery with their classmates.
The packet includes:
A circle map for brainstorming
A bubble map for describing
A prewriting outline to get some ideas flowing
A rough draft outline that will force students to structure their paper into 3 paragraphs
A one-page final draft (extension page is also included for lengthy papers)
Directions for the teacher
A teacher-made example to read to students
I RECOMMEND GETTING THE BOOK "The Mischievians". You can do the assignment without it, but it makes it so much more engaging. AND it will always be checked out of your classroom library. It's fantastic.
