Introduction: Snapshots, bellringers, do-nows, whatever you are supposed to call them are a pretty ubiquitous part of teacher-life. This is a free resource for you to use when modeling your own snapshots for a personal finance class.
How to make them useful: The beginning of class is a good time for review and to get students primed to engage in the day’s activities. Here’s how I use these snapshots to build pathways for my students to explore throughout the class period. First, we review the multiple choice questions (styled to closely resemble the high stakes test they take in the spring. As part of that review, students do a “think-aloud” for the question they volunteer to answer. In their answer they are required to make use of one of the test-wiseness skills we had studied at the start of the year (see my document Test Wiseness Skills). Second, we dive into a structured discussion of the open response question. Each of those questions is designed to help students connect their lives to key content in the unit. For a poster and explanation of the discussion format I use, see RYHOS Discussion Strategy.
