I love to read this book aloud to the class for several reasons. I love the life lessons this novel indirectly teaches. I know that reading this book touches the life of at least one student in my class each year.
I also love that the chapters are so short ;) However, I don’t like when my students are sitting there just “listening.” I’d like to assess their listening by having them listen for purpose. This packet is a very easy way for me (and you) to do just that with this novel. There is one (sometimes two) questions per chapter.
• You can simply print the section of this packet that contains 2 questions on each page, hand out to students to complete, then collect to grade. I would suggest printing these front/back since that is a lot of paper to use! Stapling into a packet for each part of the novel is helpful too!
• Or, you can have the students cut and paste the question strips (included in this download) into their journals, have them write the response, then collect the journals/notebooks to read/grade.
• Or, you can simply put the full page under your document camera for the students to copy the question then answer in their journal or index card as an exit slip.
Go at your own pace! If you are able to squeeze 2-3 chapters in a day, do it! If you’re short on time, it’s still easy to squeeze in one chapter – that’s how short these are!
I have found that this really helps me know how my students are doing with active listening. It’s also a great way to get extra grades in just in case you’re short a few grades ;)
