Product Description
A four-page, fill-in-the-blank activity which will give your students a thorough understanding of the major ideas of this seminal 18th-century essay by J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, aka St. Jean de Crèvecoeur: His contrast between American and European society; his “melting pot” theory; the role of the American frontier; religious freedom in colonial America; and his portrayal of the victimization of Native Americans.
To the Answer Key, which I have provided on separate pages, I have appended two pages of additional historical, biographical, and vocabulary notes on “What Is an American?” Since this information is not found in the student handout, you can select which items, if any, you wish to incorporate into your classroom.
The student handout is suitable for a homework assignment or as an in-class activity.
Prepared by Professor William Tarvin, Ph.D., who has published many articles on literature in scholarly journals.
