I have used this activity with To Kill a Mockingbird, but it could be used for any text that deals with a court trial and society's influence on the trial outcome. This activity takes two days for students to complete. Each student will be given a chart, and with a partner, he or she will read through 8 different real life scenarios and determine an innocent or guilty verdict based on the evidence.
Once students have read through all evidence reports, there is a slideshow that the teacher will go through and give the actual trial outcomes. Many of the slides have hyperlinks to show short clips of well-known trials: OJ Simpson, George Zimmerman, etc.
This is a great activity to get students to think about how much society and prejudice can affect an outcome. Great to do prior to Tom Robinson's trial!
