1-2 class periods
In this lesson, class members read through several paragraphs about how the criminal justice system is used to enforce laws in the United States. Students must decide which words in parenthesis best complete the sentences. Two choices are given for each blank space. The following topics are covered:
• The Police
• The Courts
• Pretrial Procedures
• The Trial
• The Correctional System
Once the reading section is completed, class members answer four Thought Questions regarding the criminal justice system. This helps develop critical thinking skills.
EXAMPLE (Thought Question #1):
The majority of police officials are convinced that stricter gun controls would reduce crime. Do you agree or disagree? Explain why. (30-50 words)
