Students will design a complete crime scene report, starting with all the information about the criminal and the incident, essentially working the crime backwards.
They will create the criminal, fill out the criminal profile, complete with pictures of said criminal and fingerprints.
They will fill out the incident report, detailing the near-perfect murder. They will interview witnesses, and really dive into the mind of this fictitious criminal, analyzing why he or she was motivated to commit the crime.
After completing the assignment, students will discuss and respond to why they think Meursault was able to commit a crime with a clear conscience.
You could also have students present and question them to see if there are any holes in their story.
My students really enjoyed this project (mostly done in class), but you will need to make sure they don't get TOO silly with their ideas. Can be done individually, or with a partner.
