This is an example of a former NYS critical lens question. It is a quote that has to be interpreted and applied to literature. With the strategy I use, students come up with synonyms for words in the quote, then use those words to help explain what the quote means. There are synonyms as a support for struggling students/ELLs. You could use this as a quote interpretation, with groups or pairs/ individual. By using synonyms, it allows them to explain the quote in other words they know.
