This is a short assignment that can be used with any literary text: short story, play, novel, etc. In this assignment, students learn seven different critical approaches to literature: feminism, gender, marxism, biographical, archetypal, psychoanalytical, historical. In small groups, with each group tackling one critical approach, students re-examine a text studied in class, under the lens of their particular critical approach. Students complete a graphic organizer following prompts for consideration and then share their findings with the class through a whole-class discussion. This works especially well with senior level classes and it allows them to look at how one text, one piece of writing, can have so many layers of subtext and meaning. Included in this purchase: overview handout of the critical approaches, graphic organizer for student notetaking, rubric to assess group work.
