This is an introductory unit that provides students with a framework to view the world. It lays the foundation for students to develop their race, class, gender, and intersectional lenses to analyze the world. It also provides in-depth instruction on the vocabulary needed to communicate how systems of oppression operate. Namely, it builds a foundational understanding of the terms dehumanization, minimization, marginalization, exploitation, and microaggression to give students a vocabulary in relation to oppression they will need to understand and discuss systems of oppression in the next four units.
