In the Critical Literacy Unit, students are encouraged to be as analytical as possible when reading new text. Whether it be magazines, advertisements, articles or blogs, an author brings opinions and assumptions into their writing. As a reader we also project our own biases and opinions when interpreting that text. This unit is designed to help students deepen their understanding of their own habits, as well as determine what opinions are being expressed by the author of the text they are reading. Through an analysis of structure, language and format, students are provided with opportunities to be critical of the literature they are exposed to.
