This short story about a girl who learns a lesson from her birthday party is for grades 1-4 and is designed to introduce critical reading skills. It can be read to the younger grades as well as self-reading for older children. It provides critical thinking questions and a writing prompt that can be altered to a "telling" activity for younger grades. It includes vocabulary words that can be taught to younger children through context and introduces literary concepts (dynamic and static characters) and composition terms such as Exposition, Narration, and Description. It can also be used as an in-service teaching tool for provoking classroom discussion and problem solving based on context clues as demonstrated through critical reading.
