Use these highly engaging activities that encourage your students to discuss their ideas and to consider the viewpoints of others. These are great activities to use when starting a non-fiction or persuasive writing unit.
The activities are ones I have been using for years at the beginning of every semester. I never jump right into the curriculum; instead I spend several days cultivating an environment where the students practice critical thinking and where they feel free to express themselves. The lessons are designed to be highly engaging and to help us build relationships as we begin our time together.
-Listen to a variety of music to learn the difference between fact and opinion
-Discuss various issues concerning dress code and image
-Learn to back their opinions up with evidence, not just emotion
-Consider others' opinions and the values behind those opinion
The zip file includes a file with instructions and student handouts, an activity called How Do You Know It's Good
, and a set of forty slides that guide you and your students through the critical thinking activities.
