Have you ever wondered how to get your kids to slow down while completing homework, especially multiple choice? How to get them to actually read the question, and take a good guess, instead of randomly answering? Have you ever caught yourself giving out homework, that you wait a week to grade and realize that it wasn't even used as a way to help you assess? I created this rubric to help answer all these questions.
This rubric can be used at ALL grade levels, for any subject, but is especially effective for use on multiple choice questions (I use it in my 9th grade Regents Earth Science). It is meant to be printed out and given to students as a guideline of how and what should be included on every homework to help foster critical thinking.
One side of the rubric gives a detailed example of what should be included when answering homework questions and the other side shows a detailed rubric that will be used to grade the homework. This rubric honors THINKING rather than "correct" answers.
I created this rubric when finishing my capstone course of my Masters in Education (Literacy Specialist). It was crafted after considering the research behind test-taking skills and the one-sidedness of tests. Meaning that the reader of the question must be aware that every word in the question is important because they are interpreting essentially someone else's ideal answer to the question.
I researched how this strategy worked in my own class. When students were given the exact same test twice, once before learning the strategy and then two months later after learning and practicing the strategy (I did not use any questions which contained content students had learned about in class). The results?! Every student scored at least 10% higher and many students scored 20% higher!
What you get:
*The Test Reading Strategy handout which includes how to use the strategy AND grading rubric for how homework will be graded when using the strategy.
*Example questions AND key
*Homework AND key
*Additional practice questions in the form of a New York state 4th grade science test.
