Introduce students to Mount Everest in this fun and unique activity unit that will have them using math skills, researching, predicting outcomes, reading a mystery, making inferences, and so much more!
This unit begins with an Encyclopedia Math page where students work 12 multiplication problems to solve the mystery and discover what topic they will be learning about: Mount Everest. Answers to the multiplication drills correspond to a letter in the accompanying code box. Now students will have background information on Mount Everest! After students complete the math problems and discover the topic of Mount Everest, they are ready to begin the pre-reading exercises that have students making predictions, using a map, learning new vocabulary, and more.
Then student read a short, high-interest mystery that takes place in Mount Everest. The mystery is packed full of clues to keep even the most reluctant of readers captivated. Following the story, comprehension questions target specific reading skills including main idea, inference, drawing conclusions, sequence, reading for details, and much more!
