Product Description
Critical Thinking Sort and Order cards for 3rd-6th grade reading, math, and Social Studies. These cards integrate speaking and listening standards and would be a great opening or closing to a workshop.

Some ways to use these cards:
-Whole Group: Line up the cards on the carpet or central meeting area. Have students sit around the cards so they can all see each card. You can lay out the guide cards next to the sorting cards so students can see the ranking expectations. Start asking critical thinking questions about the cards and let students move each card one at a time. For example, if you laid out the character traits cards (dependable, outgoing, open-minded, generous, cooperative, and determined) with the guide cards most and least to the left, you could ask: "Which of these traits MOST describe Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz? Students will start moving the cards by switching only 2 at a time. Once cards have been moved around for a while, or students have settled on an “order”, open a group discussion. Ask students to explain why they are switching cards and allow them to use text evidence to defend their choice.
-Small Group: If students are already familiar with this type of sorting activity, then you can print multiple copies of cards and allow them to work in small groups. This will allow for more participation and more discussion from each individual student. I have often opened whole group (sorting traits to describe Dorothy), and then broken students into smaller groups to sort for minor characters (Tin Man, Lion, Scarecrow).
