Strand: Geometry & Measurement
Curriculum: Determining area of a circle, establishing a connection between radius and area, understanding the formula for area of a circle.
Used in a 'three-part' format, students during this lesson explore the concept of area of a circle. Students are able to access the problem through three different entry points, all of which lead them to a greater understanding of the relevancy of Pi, Radius, and ultimately why the formula for area is crafted the way it is. The lesson embeds inquiry based practices, critical thinking skills (decoding a puzzle), and accountable talk strategies (descriptive feedback using criteria).
Includes the hand out for students along with the lesson plan and manipulatives used to guide students throughout the problem. The task aligns with the Ontario curriculum's Achievement Chart for Mathematics (Easily adaptable to other areas such as Common Core).
