Need strategies to promote critical thinking in your Fifth Grade music room? Want to encourage 21st century learning? This set includes:

*Discussion starters: Several questions are included for each of the following concepts: 6/8 meter, tam-ti (dotted quarter/ eighth), 6/8 rhythms, ti, and low ti, as well as a page of questions for various topics, such as the science of sound and theme and variations. The sheets are formatted so that you can check off the questions as you use them in your lessons, and teacher notes are included for many of the questions. A sheet is also included so you can list any additional questions you'd like to ask.
*Music journal starters: 9 sheets are included, as well as a music journal cover, which you could print off at the beginning of the year for each fifth grader or print off as you need them. The journal starters allow students to respond to music with art and with writing. Journal starters include creating art to demonstrate understanding of how size is related to pitch, Three sheets for SQUILT (Super Quiet UnInterrupted Listening Time), One sheet for reflection on what each student would write if they were a composer, a journal sheet for how students might compose music for Degas' "Mary Cassatt," and a sheet for students to create their own art, and then describe what their composition would sound like for that work of art. Worksheets are included both without a place to fill in names and with a place to fill in names; just print off whichever you'd prefer!
*Sentence starter signs: Can be printed out in color, laminated, and posted in your room to help students during class discussions. Signs include "I see," "I hear," "I notice," "I wonder," "I speculate," and "I observe." Note: The design for these signs is different from the designs included in the Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, and Fourth critical thinking sets.
*Materials to accompany the set, including:
--Songs and chants: Liza Jane, Chairs to Mend, Oh my fish in the sky, and Chumbara including any game directions
--Stick notation sheet for "Chumbara"
--"Oh my fish in the sky" in 6/8 and 2/4 meter
--"Chairs to mend" written as usual and then with two quarter notes in place of dotted quarter/ eighth (see the discussion starters for how to use)
--Venn Diagram SMART board file for comparing 6/8 and 2/4 (please note, if you don't have SMART notebook, you can view the file for free by opening it at express.smarttech.com
