This file is a new & improved revision of my popular “Critical Thinking with Geometric Shapes”. The concepts and content taught remain the same- most revision involved improving the graphics and organization of materials. I did add a geometry vocabulary crossword puzzle that I think is a great addition to the packet.
This geometry packet includes excellent resources for teaching and reinforcing geometry concepts through learning and practicing such critical thinking skills as categorizing, generalization, reasoning, comparing and contrasting, and completing analogies. The CCSS include learning objectives that require our students to not only define and/or identify subject related content, but to be able to use, evaluate, and make cross-curriculum connections. (See the product description to read the Common Core State Standards these materials address) Teachers know that this kind of learning is an excellent pathway to developing the real life skills necessary to be successful in a changing world...but they also know that this requires challenging material and repeated practice using a variety of instructional methods.
I designed these lessons with the hopes of challenging our students to think critically and apply what they know to a number of situations. This packet includes lessons based on the following:
Problem Solving using geometric shape knowledge to sort and classify a number of shapes
Completing analogies requiring a deep understanding of geometry vocabulary
Using metacognition to explain why certain responses are correct
Using deductive reasoning to understand shapes as a hierarchy model
Determining if statements are true or false based on geometric shape knowledge
Drawing and constructing shapes and figures with specific traits
This packet includes:
- 8 engaging activities that reinforce geometric shapes concepts (See the preview for specific content)
- a set of 64 shape card masters that can be glued on cardstock and/or laminated and used for a number of games or independent activities (several suggestions are given for games)
I truly hope that you find these materials unique and interesting, but most importantly, that you find that they provide your students with lots of opportunities to be actively engaged in the learning process and increase their ability to think critically. Thank you for checking out my "Critical Thinking with Geometric Shapes”!! Please leave feedback, as I truly value the opinions of my colleagues as I continue to design instructional materials.
