### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a set of activities specifically designed to promote critical thinking in your unit on systems of equations.

Critical thinking involves powerful verbs!
• Solve • Apply • Draw Conclusions • Analyze • Interpret
• Summarize • Justify valid reasoning • Communicate

In these FOUR activities students are analyzing a prompt, but they are not just finding a solution. Instead they are creating their own statements, justifying their thinking, recording questions, writing steps for themselves, and communicating math.

The focus of these activities is 2-variable systems of equations.

In “My Partner Said,” students identify true/false statements given two prompts about systems of equations and write valid conclusions of their own. They share them with partners.

In “Odd One Out,” students analyze 4 systems of equations, categorize them, and solve them. Then they determine the one that doesn’t belong. The strategy, “jigsaw,” is used to ensure that all students participate.

In “Tic Tac Toe Three Three’s in a Row” students analyze a set of prompts. Then they pair up to answer the prompts for each other. Students listen to classmates’ reasoning and summarize solutions to a variety of critical thinking prompts.

In “Systems of Equations Multi-Step Analysis Task,” Students graph four linear functions. They find the intersections of those lines graphically and algebraically, determine the geometric shape (a rectangle) created by the intersections of the four lines, and find the area of it. To extend the analysis, students then create three equations of lines that form a triangle with the same area as the quadrilateral in the first part of the task. This activity is the only one of the four sold separately. Click Here!
