I created and implemented this unit in a small group gifted and talented pull-out classroom. It could be done with advanced fourth or fifth graders. Parts of the unit may also be appropriate for independent enrichment.
The purpose of unit is to create new items from basic, common things by using divergent thinking. The students are taught the SCAMPER method to build off of their creative and critical thinking skills. I've included teacher notes, suggestions on discussion questions, useful links, fun invention facts, a long term unit project, information/activities related to marketing products, partner work, and several worksheets. Most of this document contains reproducible info to augment your instruction or for teachers to give to students who are excelling at the normal curriculum and need challenges. My students really enjoyed this unit!
When I conducted the unit, almost everything was done in class (except the parts of the long term unit project which you will find in the document). With videos and supplements, this unit took several weeks to complete but you can easily shorten or extend it.
Your children will practice and learn first-hand what it means to be an out of the box thinker with hands on activities noted in the attached unit.
