Crocodiles – LISTENING & QUESTIONS - Decker ESL Book Study

1st Grade Reader – You need to purchase the book title listed above in order to use these materials successfully. The suggested reading material or book can be purchased online, from American Reading Company, from Milestones or in bookstores.

I created these materials alongside these books to use in my middle school ESL reading class. My classroom is set up for stations and each of the materials listed above are to be used in stations.

Even though my students are middle school students, because they are newcomers and ESL students, they are just learning English and thus many are "new readers" who need more assistance in reading English.

The entire book study program has exercises designed to pair with over 150 titles from K-2nd grade reading abilities. When you identify your students’ different levels of reading abilities, you can have them immediately begin working on book titles more suited to their level or ability.

Each work or study "station" would:
1. Listen to the book being read while following along with the book.
2. Read the book out loud to gain fluency.
3. Listen again and complete the listening exercises.
4. Discuss in a group the comprehension questions.
5. Write the full answers for the comprehension questions either as a group or independently.
6. Use the vocabulary lists to build a personal dictionary.

Although I created these materials for stations, I can see them being used in whole group instruction or individualized instruction as well.

Each book's Complete Study Includes:
1. Audio File of each book (Of course you can read the book with the students. The audio allows you more freedom in the classroom if you need.)
2. Listening Exercise to be used in conjunction with the audio file.
3. Comprehension Questions.
4. Vocabulary List.

I really enjoy using early reader books. Not only do they give my students practice in reading fluency, but the illustrations give them exposure to help them visualize and learn new vocabulary. By including comprehension questions I am also incorporating academic use for reading and using those questions to spark speaking exercises in class.

Using these early reader books with their fabulous text to illustrations, in my classroom has greatly helped my ESL newcomers become better readers and increases their vocabulary as well as helps me facilitate their learning in a more efficient manner.

I hope you find this helpful in your classroom. Look for the other products associated with this program by searching the title of the book. Or you can search Decker ESL and this scroll through the titles and products.

Thanks again and GOOD LUCK this Year!
