This is an interdisciplinary lesson between art, science, and literature.
It introduces and reviews abstract art, biology basics through cells, and literature through the discussion of the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
, in a discussion of HeLa cells. This acrylic painting lesson plan is designed for advanced painting, 2D Design, or AP Art breadth.
The students are asked to research cells and choose one they want to use as inspiration for an abstract work of art. Like abstract art, cells have an interesting combination of line, shape, color, and form.
In addition to exploring abstract art, the students participate in an in progress critique and choosing where to display their finished artwork. Discussions on critique methods and displaying artwork are covered.
See the presentation I use introduce the project to my students. The PowerPoint includes project info, step by step instructions, examples of cells, and information on HeLa cells.
