This is a cross curricular unit covering, story-telling, math, art and music. Using the ever-fascinating backdrop of “outer space” children will connect their imaginations to investigate properties of colors, color mixing, expression through art, telling stories through art, drawing as an emergent pre-writing skill, interpreting art and the importance of a common unit of measurement. The outer space portion is purely imagination and not based on actual planetary information. The imagination is the vehicle to learn about concepts and relies on make believe and pretend outer space settings, not actual planets.
This is a fluid activity and relies on input from the children. Each classroom's outcome will look different. Sharing the different outcomes if several classrooms participate will demonstrate one of my main goals of teaching: many people can look at the same thing and see something different.
