I'm sure you've heard the puzzle about a farmer who has a goat, cabbage, and a wolf, and he has to get all 3 to cross the river safely. However there are conditions that make the solution a little puzzling! For example, he can only take 1 item across at a time and certain animals can't be left together. Well I have taken that infamous puzzler and made it ideal for the classroom. There is a single page of just the problem. You can project it on the board/screen or make it into a poster. There is a student work page with the problem written again and also pieces of the characters for students to manipulate. Additionally, I've included a student answer sheet for students to write and explain how they've solved the problem. Finally, there is the answer key.
This can be used as a math center, small group activity, independent work, a challenge activity, or partner work. It's a great, easy, fun way for kids to share their thinking, communicate, and collaborate, which ties into Common Core. This is also a great way for kids to explore and practice problem solving without using numbers.
I would recommend this for grades 2-5, although I've seen first graders solve it!
