This worksheet accompanies the first 30-40 minutes of the 2004 film version of the play, The Crucible, starring Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder. It is intended for one class period, with a bit of follow up discussion the next day, and I have used it both before we begin reading the play and after we have read the first 2 scenes of Act 1.
The 10 short answer questions ask students to observe what is happening both in the woods and the morning after, to get a sense of the conflicts and characterization in the play. This is the foundation on which they will build their understanding of the events that unfold afterward.
The fact that it is a graded assignment also ensures they will watch the film closely, observe, interpret and respond. Also, a guided viewing allow for discussion and comparison of scenes in the film versus the play.
