This is an essay prompt asking students to evaluate the appendix (act II, scene 2) from Arthur Miller's play The Crucible and the modified version of the scene as it appears in the 1996 film adaptation by Nicholas Hytner (the scene in the woods between Abigail and John). The file includes the prompt itself, a prewriting sheet for students to fill in, and a checklist for them to fill out before submitting their essays. This file does not include the appendix itself, as I did not want to violate copyright. However, many reading versions of the play include the appendix, and it can also be found online if you google "Crucible full text."
I used this prompt as part of a semester exam after students had read the play, viewed the film version, and written about both. The prompt requires students to draw upon their knowledge of the play, and in my students' case, to evaluate something new, as we had not read or discussed the appendix as a class.
