The Crucible by Arthur Miller

This play has many characters, but this lesson focuses on eight main characters: John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Giles Corey, Mary Warren, Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, and Rebecca Nurse. First, students participate in a gallery walk competition where they list traits, actions, and quotes only for the character they are assigned. Groups rotate and must continue listing information not already written for the characters. To do this, they have to read what other groups wrote first. Of course, this is timed, so students have to move and think quickly. Specific instructions are given for this activity to tally points and ensure a calm classroom!

In addition, handouts are included for students to use as a guide for writing introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion for an expository essay on a character from The Crucible. Students are already familiar with several of them from the gallery walk.

A rubric for grading the essay is also included.
