Use these four worksheets paired with four articles to enhance your students' understanding of the history of the Salem Witch Trials, the role of a key witness in the trials, and the context surrounding Arthur Miller's writing of The Crucible.
The four worksheets (double-sided for eight total pages) are
❏ Who was Tituba?
❏ Overview of the Salem Witch Trials
❏ McCarthy and the Red Scare
❏ Crucible's Deleted Scene (based on a fiction piece)
Links to three of the four articles (Tituba, Overview, Red Scare) are included. The Red Scare article requires a FREE Newsela account. It is not included in the material for which Newsela currently charges a subscription fee. Because The Crucible is under copyright and not in the public domain, a link to the deleted scene is not included, but can be found via a Google search for the full version of the play or in a text containing the entire version.
Questions include inferences, personal opinions, higher order thinking, critical thinking, vocabulary and comparisons. An answer key with suggested answers is included for each worksheet, though your students' answers may vary.
Articles can be read after each act of the play, as a recap after the play is finished, or as pre-reading information.
