This is a double-sided worksheet on the topic of calculating area that is designed to be highly-engaging through its connection to vacation cruising. Students are asked to calculate the area of a room and determine the cost per square foot for that room. They are given a short scenario that creates a budget of $3,000, providing students with a reason to value the calculation requirements and giving them a real world example of using math.
There are 3 cruise cabins that the students will perform calculation for and eventually select from as far as a preferred option. I highly recommend that students be provided with calculators for use with this worksheet. The worksheet is formatted in such a way as to scaffold the work for the students. At the end, students are prompted to think about the information and write opinions.
