To understand the extent to which Fidel Castro influenced the history, politics, economy, and way of life in Cuba.
1 class period
In this lesson, students begin by reading background information in sections 1-4:
1. The Castro Revolution
2. The New Government
3. Bay of Pigs Invasion
4. Cuban Missile Crisis
As they are reading, have them underline or highlight the most important words, names, terms, and ideas. When they are finished reading, give each class member the question sheet for Contest 1 (page 10D).
In Contest 1, students compete to answer as many questions as possible by filling in the missing words, names, and terms. Each correct answer is worth either 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 points depending on the difficulty of the question. A perfect score is 100.
After Contest 1 ends and winners are determined, have students read sections 5-6:
5. Social Programs
6. Foreign Relations
Contest 2 then follows and is played in the same way as Contest 1.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included.
