Great paired work activity using the internet for students to become more familiar with the politics and history of Cuba. Great way to make connections to Social Studies in the target language. Handout has 20 questions for students to search for responses. A key is also provided.
Students afterwards break into groups to share their findings. Then as a whole class activity students compare and contrast their findings. For upper level students, I have them use the data to write a composition of four paragraphs (Introduction, body and closing). Great writing prompt because they get to use several verb tenses (Preterit, Imperfect, Present Perfect and Present tense).
To further enhance the lesson they can research changes made by President Obama and Trump in regards to our relationship with Cuba. They can include that data in their compositions as well, better suited for their closing. Also makes a connection to current events.
Making connections to Social Studies and current events in the target language is an added benefit and helps build vocabulary and review grammar.
