Cubing is a writing exercise in which AP Language and Composition students will explore a concept through six "sides" of a cube, from description to taking a stance. Each side is increasingly complex and will challenge your students to think critically and creatively.
I'm confident that you find this assignment and lesson plan useful as your students write to deepen their thinking about the world around them. This lesson can be used again and again—in the same year—with very little prep! All you need to do is choose an argument prompt for your students and make copies as necessary.

Cubing an argument has been a successful part of my AP Language and Composition classroom. I use the same process for both the argument and synthesis prompts.
-Students are pushed to consider a wide variety of perspectives.
-Students must develop and demonstrate a deep understanding of the prompt.
-Students develop physical and mental stamina as they write for an extended time about a topic.
-Scaffolding for struggling students is built into the process.
-This exercise allows you to easily observe which students have difficulty generating ideas or considering multiple perspectives, allowing you to differentiate more effectively.
