Los Angeles, California, 1926-1927.

Cuca has been sent back to Huejuquilla, Jalisco to stay with her mother while Miriam is in mourning and arranges to sell her property in Miami, Arizona. Dora writes to Armida Caminante asking for her husband’s help settling in and finding investment property when they get to Los Angeles. Señora Caminante writes back that her husband, Alberto, has a six bedroom home in Hollywood.

Dora is embarrassed to find out that Alberto’s home is not in Hollywood but really in Silver Lake. Nevertheless, Miriam and Dora accept Alberto’s offer to let them stay with him while they look for property. He also flatters Dora asking her if she is an entertainer and if, perhaps, he can provide her with voice, music or elocution lessons.

Alberto introduces Miriam to one of his students, Marcelina “Chelo” Torres-Novas. Chelo owns a Pool Hall and Grill in Downtown Los Angeles. She takes music lessons from Alberto in order to entertain her “back room” guests. Miriam asks Chelo for business advice.

Chelo asks Miriam to take over her lease of El Cielito Lindo Pool Hall & Grill. She claims that she can only afford monthly payments but that the owners of her building want five years rent in one lump sum. Alberto escorts Miriam and Dora to Chelo’s place of business where Miriam inspects the property and Chelo’s books. Miriam is introduced to Ernesto, a handsome, attentive Spanish speaking Pilipino who is a partner in the neighboring, Chuy’s Barbershop.

Ernesto suggests that Miriam lease the whole building that houses three business’ on Figueroa Street. When Miriam protests that they don’t know how much money she has to invest and that she needs the advice of un contadór, an accountant, Alberto suggests that she see his accountant, notary and artistic agent who has her offices in the prestigious Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles, “ It’s almost like Hollywood for Los Méjicanos!” Alberto claims.
