Product Description
Cuca’s Conundrums Episode Six: Los Bohemians,1928,” written by Norma Landa Flores and available on digital download at teacherspayteachers.com, is a 22 page Short Story and Oral Communication Lesson, the Sixth Episode out of 17, about an undocumented immigrant girl who makes her way from Mexico to Texas and Arizona to settle in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles, California.

Cuquita’s aunt Miriam and her cousin Dora get settled in their Fourplex on Anderson Street in Boyle Heights. Dora has a used piano delivered to their apartment and insists that she wants to be part of an elegant community, in La Colonia. Miriam tells her that she has to study to become a typist and successful business woman in order to earn her own living in Boyle Heights.

Dora agrees to attend Central Junior High School to study secretarial skills but worries that she is too old for school. Miriam urges her to use her half-sister’s birth certificate and insists that it’s okay to cheat a little in order to survive in Arizona and now in Los Angeles. Ernesto agrees that both Mexicans and Filipinos have their own “realistic ways” of surviving in Los Angeles.

Miriam makes sure to invite people who will open the doors to Dora’s imagined elegant, artistic Colonia, to her birthday party. The guest list includes a cowboy movie star/baker, some movie and newspaper writers, a few dancers, and Alberto Caminante, soon to be announcer on the new bilingual radio station: KAGO.

After dinner, much champagne is consumed by all of Dora’s birthday party guests who take turns entertaining each other with songs, dancing and recitations. They have a very loud, good time until Don Carlos Cardenas Wong and Señora Carrillo ask Hollenbeck Police Station Officer Chaparro to break up the party. He warns them that they can’t behave like drunken borrachos in Boyle Heights.

The Epilogue: “May the Virgin Mary Protect Dora,” features the High-Central Tense [ ɝ ] and the Mid-Central Relaxed [ ɚ ] Vowels in 53 words that are highlighted in red for [ ɝ ] and purple for [ ɚ ] so that students can recognize the various spelling patterns that make those vowel sounds. Practice sentences and assessment form are included.
