This resource is three individual resources about cults and sociology and psychology bundled together for 10% savings.
1. Sociology students will learn about the characteristics of cults and cult leaders with this engaging gallery walk that can also be posted on a secure classroom platform or presented as a packet. Students will discern the definition of a cult, the types of cults, the characteristics of cult leaders, cult prospects and recruitment, and methods or leaving a cult. As they do so, they will create a handbook that prints using only three pages!
2. Students will consider cults as an outcome of the risky shift phenomenon. They watch and respond to a short film and read and respond to an engaging article on a foldable graphic organizer,
3. Students will watch Helter Skelter and respond on a color-fill film guide. Helter Skelter chronicles the events surrounding the Manson Family from 1969-1971. Students will understand how the Manson Family was a cult and how its leader, Charles Manson, manipulated its members to commit terrible crimes. The film guide asks students to find examples of characteristics of cult leaders, steps of recruitment, characteristics of those at-risk, and evidence of the risky shift in the film.
Helter Skelter film is not included. It can be ordered on YouTube or Amazon. The film is the 2004 made for T.V. CBS version. Always preview films before showing to make sure they are appropriate for your students. Currently, a lesser quality version of the film may be accessed for free online (link provided).
All three of these assignments combined make for nearly a week’s worth of instruction and a thorough study of the sociology of cults!
