PPT in PDF format in Spanish with images from Google to explain the mix of cultures in the Caribbean focusing on the three Spanish speaking islands and historical information; Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Great lesson to use for Cultural Diversity Week or a thematic lesson for the Caribbean or the Taíno indians.
Includes also two handouts to review the material presented in the PPT. PPT and handouts are in PDF format. One handout is a matching activity and the other is a true or false activity.
In addition, to accompany PPT while I'm presenting it, I have students work on a KWL chart. Prior to viewing the PPT they fill in the column of that they already know about the Tainos. As we view the PPT they fill in what they are learning. The last column, what they would like to know more, they fill out at the end of the presentation. That leads to a Web Quest in which they search the answers for the questions they had. Can be done in the library as a class or assigned for HW. The following day students share the date they obtained with the class which gives them the opportunity of speaking in the target language.
The KWL can be easily found online:
As a closing activity students write a summary ¿Quiénes eran los taínos?"
For high level Spanish students (Intermediate Low to High) I have them write a three paragraph composition. In the introduction they mention the arrival of Cristobal Colón and the conquest. In the body they discuss who the Taino were and in the closing they wrap it up by mentioning that today many Puerto Ricans have Taino DNA.
