This project is a proven winner for teaching the concept of cultural diffusion in your anthropology, world geography, history, or social studies class. Students speak very highly of this (admittedly oddly named) project and regularly report that it is one of their favorites of the year.
Here's a quick summary of the concept:
After teaching the concept of cultural diffusion, teachers ask students to identify something that they think might be the product of cultural diffusion. Students might say "Lasagna" or "Soccer" or even "Thai Food."
Students write down their concept at the BOTTOM of a sheet of paper (ideally a large sheet of paper) and then begin working up the page and diagraming the immediate, second-level, and even third-level origins of their cultural concept.
When they have finished, they are able to see how something that feels very familiar to them has very complicated roots!
To ensure understanding, the student instructions also have a set of optional reflection questions that make this an outstanding culminating project for your cultural geography unit.
