PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this activity students compare cultural foods to Canada's Food Guide.

Step 1 - List all of the ingredients used in the dish.

Step 2 - Estimate the approximate serving size of each ingredient Use realistic portion sizes – what a person would actually eat!

Step 3 - Use the table to graph the amount of servings, per dish, according to its food group.

When you have completed the table, analyse the data.

Step 4 - How could you modify the recipe to create a balance meal? Be specific.

Step 5 - Write a 1 page, double-spaced, reflection that answers the following questions:

Classroom Use:
I used this activity in two different courses: Food and Culture; Food and Nutrition. They completed this activity in combination with a larger project about cultural foods. The important lesson learned by many students was that many of the foods they grew up on were very healthy - if they were prepared in healthier ways!

This is a great activity to have students complete with a supply teacher.
