Our school is highly diverse, so teaching world geography can be a treat since the kids often bring so much of other cultures with them. This is one of the first assignments I complete with the kids in September. It is a basic questionnaire that the students take home for a week. They are to ask parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or any other relatives these questions, such as "What kind of food is popular in our country of origin?" The students are required to ask only one relative, but receive a Star Buck (our class reward cards that go in for weekly drawings) for every other questionnaire that is complete. They then report to the class (from their seats - this is low-key) what they learned from their relatives. Finally, students are asked to request family members who are local to come in and talk to us as a class.
Since we often have students from all continents, it is a nice school-home connections as well.
This product is the simple questionnaire to get you started.
