A great discussion lesson plan designed for the EFL classroom. It's easily adapted to any diverse classroom. Students love this lesson. It really generates a lot of conversation.
Too often we act as if our cultural differences between our students are problematic rather than a rich resource for discussion. This complete lesson plan takes advantage of students' culture by asking them to talk about specific actions and how they are viewed in their culture in a safe, non-judgmental environment. It really gets them speaking.
The lesson plan starts with a warm-up activity discussing a proverb. Students then discuss how they perform a simple action in their own country or culture before breaking into small groups to compare what behaviors are expected and what behaviors are unexpected in their culture or country.
One of my best selling lesson plans on the English Advantage website and one of the most popular for my students. In multi-cultural classrooms this often leads to wonderful and deep sharing of cultural and personal knowledge.
