This is by far one of my FAVORITE lessons!

Directions: Tell Students you are going to show them some pictures. Tell Students to shout out the FIRST adjective that comes to mind when you see each picture. Not what they see, but descriptions. Quickly write their words on one list for the first 3 pictures. Make another list for the caucasian man.

Afterwards, next to each word write a + (for a positive comment) and a - (for a negative comment) and nothing for a comment that is neither good nor bad.

Students will have yelled about MANY more negative comments for the "strange" looking men. Ask them why they did that?

Are they mean people? Could they be trustable? Why did you have so many more negative things to say?

Discuss about how our culture tends to be private and sometimes untrusting.

Ask students what the Natives reaction when Columbus and his European men sailed to shore. To the students surprise, tell them they came right up to the boat! They were trusting & they share everything.

Discuss the differences in culture. European vs Native.
