This lesson is based around the article “The Body Ritual of the Nacirema” by Horace Miner. At first, the Nacirema people seem very different and strange. When we change our point-of-view, we discover that this was written from an outsider perspective and that the Nacirema people are just Americans!
This is one of my favorite lessons in my first unit. I use it to discuss multiple perspectives, empathy, and analyzing other cultures. This is a lesson you can refer back to multiple times throughout the year and one that your students will DEFINITELY remember!
Included in this resource is a lesson outline with execution suggestions, a link to the article online, an 8 slide Google Slide presentation, and 2 handouts - guided notes and a highly engaging culminating activity where students take on the role of outside observer.
In order to make this lesson fit the needs of your students, I am sharing a “view only” version of this presentation and handouts through Google Drive. You can customize these based on your students’ needs or for time.
