Students will research the culture of a specific country. They will look for information like: the languages spoken in their country, customs and traditions in their country, popular music, sports, and people in their country, and more. Students will record the information they find in a graphic organizer. Students then create a digital representation of the information they have researched.
All second graders in my school took part in this project. My class created both PowerPoint and Prezi Presentations (found online at http://prezi.com/) to present their country information to other students in our second grade. It took approximately three weeks for students to gather the answers to all their questions and to create their presentation. Students then took about two days to practice their presentations and delegated who would speak and when. They also delegated who would be in charge or “stamping passports.”
When the day came to present their presentations, the students across the second in my school chose four countries to visit for approximately 15mins each. They received “boarding passes” to the countries they wanted to “visit” and learn more about. When students attended a different presentation, they received stamps (flags printed out and glued) in their passports to document the countries they visited.
This project was an amazing experience! My students learned how to work in cooperative groups, learned valuable research skills (both in the classroom and our Media Center teacher who helped them with their research!), stretched their technology skills when they created their presentations, and gained confidence with speaking in front of their peers.
