RAPlets® is the result of several frustrating years of working with middle school students who had difficulty understanding and retaining content within the curriculum. My students could remember every lyric they ever learned from the rap music they embraced, but could not express themselves with the written word.
The results of the latest nationwide testing shows even further decline in student knowledge. In order to retain common core curriculum, I devised a simple way to encourage them to remember content. By combining rap rhythm with the design of traditional couplets, I gave my students a guided method to achieve the goal of all teachers; to help them become successful students.
In two lines of writing, they can go anywhere from simple fact-finding to a synthesis of their latest science fair project. I created the artwork with cut-outs so that they can imitate it and further cement their understanding. They can use a RAPlets® LITE or a RAPlets® SUPREME to express their thoughts about a novel, or tell a family anecdote. The best part is that they enjoyed it.
This method can be used with in any classroom and with any subject. It can also be applied to just about any one of the core standards.
