PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Current events help students connect to the world around them. This comprehensive packet includes opportunities for reading, writing, art, cooperative learning, and building oral language skills. Uses a step-by-step approach to guide student success. Can be used with any current event article or event.

Overview: This provides an in-depth learning experience that allows students to consider multiple aspects of current events. Incorporates activities for several learning styles: thinkers, doers, feelers, and observers. Adaptable to a variety of learning levels and needs.

Get Started Right - Introduce this current event project with an introductory lesson. The focus is to be informative, set expectations, establish due dates, and explain requirements. The handouts are intended to be brought home and used as parent/student resource/reference. Teachers can decide on adaptions, modifications and timelines that best met the needs of the class.

Student Choice Article Selection - The second lesson focuses on how to select a newsworthy article from a creditable sources. Students will learn about newsworthiness and creditability by using simple criteria and guidelines. Teachers guide the selection process by determining topic, subject, event, or allow a free choice option. Teacher tools include project tracking forms.

Article Analysis - Students have the opportunity to deeply explore content using eight different graphic organizers. Each organizer focuses on a different aspect. The organizers are each formatted different so students are exposed to different methods for arranging/organizing information.

Academic Discussions - An entire section is included to ensure that group work and discussion are meaningful and productive. It is recommended that discussion groups are centered around the information gathered on a single graphic organizer. Included are several forms and handouts that set the expectations and guiding principles. Teacher tools include several assessment strategies that are based on observable criteria.

Decide on the Drafting Forms - Teachers are given the option of three different rough draft forms. Pick your form based on individual student needs or the needs of the entire class.

Publishing Final Project - Students will complete the front section of a newspaper. Like any newspaper, each page will require titles, captions, graphics, and sidebars. Student have the opportunity to share their final product with other through the “Letters to the Editor” section.

Assessment/Grading - Grading will be a snap using the included rubrics, criteria forms and summary grading sheet.
