I'm a stickler for the timeless current event activity. This is a comprehensive assessment of a student's nonfiction skills including: text features, accessing prior knowledge, summarizing, identifying the 5Ws and an H (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How), main idea and details, sequencing, and facts and opinions. Students can adequately convey their understanding of informational text, and share their reflections.
At the end each article, students must reflect on how this news impacts those involved and how this news has impacted them moving forward. It's a great way to hold students accountable to engaging with the world around them.
