Engage your students in world events! With this assignment students will have the opportunity to make personal connections with the news articles they choose to read and report on. Rather than assigning students to write the ever-dreaded standardized summary, they will use "personal response text structures" to share information about the article while making a personal connection at the same time. This makes researching world events more meaningful and fun for them. It also makes reading and grading a report a little more fun for you!
In this assignment I have utilized text structures for the "kernel essay", which is a writing strategy developed by veteran teacher/author, Gretchen Bernabei. Gretchen's text structures are used with permission for this resource. Click here

Using the text structures makes this an excellent resource for differentiation.
My sixth graders love researching current events and look forward to the weeks when we have "News Flash Friday" and share our reports.
