Current Events are a great way to make connections between your social studies class and current real life events. I assign my middle schools students to complete one current event for each month, and they place it in a folder. At the end of the school year, they students have created a portfolio of their events. In May, the students are assigned a current event project that requires them to reflect on the events that had the greatest impact on them personally. This project requires the students to design their own newspaper, highlighting their favorite or most interesting articles of that year.
This includes: Current Event Instructions, Explanation of Current Event summary sheet, Current Event project instructions, Current Event Project handout (newspaper replica), and a grading rubric.
